Idiom of the week # 8697094598064
'Let sleeping dogs lie'
The idiom 'let sleeping dogs lie' means that when we have had a problem or argument with somebody we should not start talking about it again. It is better to forget about things and move on...
In real life, if we wake up a sleeping dog, sometimes it can be angry and bite us. So if we start an old argument people can be even more angry...
Dean: "My girlfriend is still not washing my clothes. I will have to talk to her about it again!"
Lee: "It's probably best not to Dean - you'll only get into a big quarrel - better to let sleeping dogs lie!"
WORD(S) OF THE WEEK - 'SINK' AND 'SHRINK'
I like these words because they both sound nice and they both have 2 meanings - a verb and a noun. First up is 'sink'
As a noun, a 'sink' is a place where we wash our plates, knives, forks pots and pans etc
As a verb 'to sink' means to go down in water e.g 'a stone sinks if you put it onto water' or 'a ship sinks if it has a hole in it!'
Secondly, the verb 'to shrink' means that something becomes or is made smaller. If you put a wool sweater in a very hot wash it shrinks. I sometimes have shrink the pictures on this blog so that they look good and fit onto the page.
As a noun a 'shrink' is a psychiatrist or psychologist who helps people when they have mental illness or life problems
NOW WE CAN ADD THESE TWO WORDS TOGETHER TO DESCRIBE ONE OF MAN'S MOST STUPID INVENTIONS - A SILLY PIECE OF PLASTIC WHICH MAKES WASHING UP MORE DIFFICULT WITH LESS SPACE........

THE 'SINK-SHRINKER'
