Word of the week - 'VICE'
The word 'vice' has several meanings and we will look at them today
First, 'vice' as in Miami Vice (see picture) In this way, vice means some types of crime, such as Prostitution, illegal drugs etc. The Miami Vice boys try to stop this type of crime.
People also have 'vices'. In this meaning a vice is like a habit or an addiction - something we find it difficult to stop doing (cigarettes, drugs or alcohol etc.)
We can also use 'vice' like 'second' or 'secondary' in things like 'vice president' or 'vice headteacher'. The vice president in America is Dick Cheney.
Finally, a vice is a tool which is used in making wooden things. It holds them in a certain place so we can work more easily (see picture)
Idiom of the Week
'The grass is always greener on the other side'
This idiom means that whatever we have now, things always look better for somebody else and we are never happy with what we've got.
We shouldn't always think that what other people have is better so sometimes we say 'the grass isn't always greener on the other side'
D: "I wish I was a doctor - they earn lots of money"
L: "They have to work very long hours and there is a lot of stress - the grass isn't always greener on the other side!"
D: "I suppose you're right!"
A LOOK AT CHUCK
Here's Chuck!! He's back and this time in a cool pair of 'shades' (or sunglasses) He is my hero! Chuck may be getting older (he's in his 70's now) but he still rocks the world.
THE FACT:
"Chuck Norris' watch has no numbers on it. It just says 'time to kick ass'"
